Complex cases – approaching the anterior open-bite

Abstract

Anterior open-bite cases are known to be difficult to treat satisfactorily because of their multifactorial etiology and their high relapse rate. Depending on the cause, patients age and functional issues, several treatment approaches can be used and Aligners, if properly applied, can be highly effective in achieving a stable, esthetic and functional good final result. 

By using aligners only or combining them with auxiliaries or in a multidisciplinary approach, we can address from the most simple anterior open-bite to the most severe and complex one. A characteristic that we need to respect in all the cases we plan is the correct sequencing of movements and that is specially true when working with aligners. Biomechanics is the key and it always needs to be planned in respect for the biological principles of the tissues, soft and hard.

In this presentation, we will explore how the Invisalign system provides an efficient and predictable solution for managing Class II deep bite malocclusions in both adult and teenage patients. The discussion will focus on key aspects of treatment planning, including: Accurate diagnosis and digital workflow integration using advanced technologies. Strategies to ensure compliance and track progress in adolescent patients. Evidence-based approaches for managing occlusal contacts and overjet reduction. Real-life clinical cases will illustrate step-by-step planning, highlighting how digital simulations tools enhance treatment efficiency and predictability. This session aims to provide practitioners with actionable insights into achieving functional and aesthetic outcomes while maintaining efficiency in their orthodontic practices.

Marieke Bakker Orthodontist

Marieke voltooide in 2002 haar opleiding tandheelkunde aan de ACTA in Amsterdam. In 2007 voltooide zij de opleiding tot Orthodontist aan de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen. Zij is onder andere bestuurslid geweest bij de ANT en de LVT. Momenteel werkt zij ook samen met de afdeling kaakchirurgie van het LUMC. Marieke is eigenaresse van Orthodontistenpraktijk Rechtetanden.nl in Leiden. Zij heeft ervaring met de Aligner systemen van Invisalign, Spark en Sure Smile. Momenteel werkt zij ook met Angel Aligner.
